About Ann Burnham’s work
Ann Burnham’s printmaking is informed by the regular walks in the countryside. In fact, she finds most of her inspiration along the coastal paths of the South Hams in Devon. Likewise, she is also drawn to the rolling hills, narrow hedgerow lanes and the dramatic coastline.
On one hand, she is intuitive in her approach, starting with a feeling or idea. She may be inspired by the way the wind has blown a tree, its interesting shape. Also a path leading into the distance, or the bare trees with their beautiful and complex shapes contrasting against winter fields. Then, she makes sketches and takes photos along the way, working on these upon returning to her garden studio
On the other hand, her method is traditional. The reduction linocut method suits her slightly graphic approach to the image, where she can accentuate the patterns and shapes from her sketches into a print. She enjoys the planning and decision making of the reduction Lino technique, working out the many layers of colour that will applied to the plate at each stage. It’s a complicated process but worth it when it goes right. Ann’s recent work has become more representational, experimenting with ways of creating skies and mist to create a softer look. To achieve this, she uses a monoprint technique of wiping the ink rather than cutting away. She also enjoy’s the direct and rich mark making of the monoprint process as a contrast of spontaneity compared to reduction linocut.
