About Kate Rattray

For 28 years, Kate Rattray has been making mosaic art works using a variety of materials. Her process includes glass, ceramic and her own hand gilded glass. She also makes bespoke work for clients, notably wall mosaic murals for indoor and outdoors.

Her mosaic practice began in Devon when she built her first mosaic on a school wall with children in 1994. Later in 1999 she moved to Somerset where she continued to make mosaics for clients and exhibitions. As well as running workshops with schools, and courses for adults from her studio.

She has now returned to Devon and works and teaches from my studio at Black Barns Studios in Liverton, near Bovey Tracey. In the last 6 years, Kate has developed her own style in mosaic sculpture. Starting with exploring form through various sculptural techniques. Often using wire, cement board, plaster and polystyrene and decorating with a mosaic skin. Finally, she incorporates her own gilded glass in the mosaic decoration as well as wire and gilded toys to complete each piece.

Above all, Kate takes inspiration from surrounding nature and myth and is interested in finding relationships between ancient mythology and the modern world. Many of her sculptures are built to hang on a wall and take the form of birds, ships and insects in flight.
